The First Luthern Church sits up on a hill overlooking the historic downtown and the Port of Poulsbo.
Brief History: In 1886 a conference "circuit rider" found his way to Dogfish Bay (now known as Liberty Bay) in the Washington Territory. This is even before the town of Poulsbo was founded. The circuit rider was Rev. Niles G. Nilson, who found enough Norwegians around the Bay to start a congregation they named "Fordefjord" after Jorgen Eliasons' home in Norway. Jorgen Eliason donated the land for the church and the adjacent cemetary from his homestead and in 1888 the first sanctuary was built by the congregation. The name of the church has since been Americanized to First Luthern, which still stands on the original site. The bells can still be heard ringing throughout town on a daily basis.
